Flims - Natural Wonders Galore
Flims, lying to the west of Chur, is perhaps less well known in Britain than some of Graubünden's more famous resorts. It is located on a terrace north of the Rhine valley and its eponymous mountain – the Flimserstein – can be seen from anywhere in the area. Flims has natural wonders galore. You’ll find turquoise waters in the swimming lake of Cauma with picturesque bays and set amongst a vast forest. From the viewing platform “Il Spir”, wonder at Switzerland’s Little Grand Canyon, the Rhine Gorge – you can even go white water rafting along it too. The mountain range behind Flims, with a perfect 19 metre hole through one of its rocks was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008.

Flims as a destination, made up of the villages of Flims, Laax and Falera, offers loads of opportunities for adventurers on two wheels or two feet with over 330 km of bike trails and 250km of marked hiking trials. Flims is rapidly building its reputation as a mountain bike destination suiting the individual needs of freeriders, cross-country specialists and families alike. And if you want to take it easy you can explore the mountains with an electro bike, with rental and service stations throughout the destination. Hikers and walkers of all abilities will find plenty of scenic itineraries to keep them busy, and will be tempted by the 'Wood and Water' walk from Waldhaus to Lake Cresta, combining a walk with a three course meal of local dishes, each course taken at a different restaurant.

The resort and environs are blessed with an abundance of dramatic natural features, including the ‘Flimser Grosswald’ one of the largest wooded areas in Graubünden, which is perfect for families and nature lovers to explore, the nearby Rhine gorge and perhaps most remarkably, the turquoise green waters and beaches of Lake Cauma, which seems more Med than mountain. The lake is a popular place for a dip after a day of Alpine activities, and in the height of summer the water attains a very comfortable temperature of 24c. Staying with water, the nearby Rhine Gorge – the Grand Canyon of Switzerland – offers superb white water rafting in a dramatic setting, as well as hiking trails along its course.

The 'Families Welcome' accreditation is awarded to selected Swiss resorts that are sensitive and pro-active to the needs of holidaying families, and Flims is a member of this elite band. Special children's programmes fill every day with a new adventure, or family groups can purchase the Family Pass giving access to many activities and local transport. A summer holiday in Flims will put a sunny smile onto every child's face, and everyone knows that happy kids make happy parents!
