The Palm Express makes a 3½-hour trip from the heights of the world-famous holiday resort St. Moritz along the lake shores of the Upper Engadin through the villages of Silvaplana and Sils with their typical Engadin houses, as far as the last village in the Engadin, Maloja. Soon after the Maloja Pass the road winds down into the Bregaglia Valley. The typical villages and the fine chestnut woods show a Mediterranean influence. The Bregaglia with its peaks well known to climbers is the home of the Giacometti family of artists. The painter Giovanni Segantini found many themes for his pictures here too. At Castasegna the Palm Express crosses the national border, and soon afterwards you arrive in the market town of Chiavenna. Then you pass Lake Como and Lake Lugano, at Gandria you cross back into Switzerland and then arrive in the capital of Ticino canton, Lugano.
