Bregaglia Engadin

by Michael Kirchner, Director of Tourism

Bun di!

Did you know that the way to my home over the Julier Pass was the most important route in the central Alps for centuries? In summer you can walk along the same tracks as the Romans here – or, even better, you can simply rest in our idyllic valley. You will notice that in Bergell time passes more slowly, at exactly the right tempo for a relaxing holiday in the grandiose mountainside.

The Bergell Alpen Valley connects the Graubünden canton to Italy and thus the North with the South. It is characterised by steep cliffs such as the Granite Mountains of the Sciora group, by the native forests and small villages which are rich in history and art. Bergell has always been a perfect place for hikers and mountain climbers, but also for artists on the search for peace and inspiration from nature. The diverse vegetation enchants all the guests when they are travelling along historical hiking paths with breathtaking views, such as the Chestnut Nature Trail, in one of the biggest chestnut forests in Europe. Enjoy the chestnut specialities such as chestnut marmalade or the Bergell chestnut tortelli and the chestnut festival in October.

In the seemingly untouched countryside there are such natural and elegant artistic treasures hiding. Alberto Giacometti was born in Bergell, as well as Giovanni Segantini and Varlin, who were inspired here in their works. Whether by the main river Maira, also called “Potente,” or the Mediterranean climate, which makes a summer holiday pleasant even at altitudes of more than 2000 metres.

For children there is the “Cià c'am va,” a path for families which is accessible over five different short trails with push chairs. Particular places can therefore be visited, special subjects be broached and activities be offered in a natural and cultural environment.

Warmth, hospitality and a vast history from our valley: a holiday here puts you in another world and releases you from your daily life with a deeply felt inner peace. To conclude with an example: on the Roman trail Malögin from the Maloja Pass down to Bergell the wheel tracks of the carts can still be seen in the rocks. Follow their trail; I wish you a wonderful holiday.
