Facts and Figures
The Albula line was completed in 1903, the Bernina line in 1910. At the time of its construction, the Albula line was already regarded as a masterpiece. The Bernina line (St. Moritz - Tirano) served as the model for many projected and some completed trans-Alpine railways. Today it is unique in the entire world: the highest-altitude trans-Alpine line in Europe, and a line with one of the steepest gradients in the world without the use of rack and pinion technology.
